The Why

Sleep is a necessity of life. It is so vital to our social and emotional health, physical health, and overall wellbeing. Did you know that sleep problems don’t just go away? Studies show that babies who do not get enough sleep are more likely to be toddlers who do not get enough sleep and then preschoolers who do not get enough sleep. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, children who get enough sleep have a healthier immune system, better memory and mental health, perform better in school, and have less behavior problems. We want our children to be happy and healthy so they can grow and develop to reach their full potential in all areas of development. Sleep is essential to the components that lend to this growth. It is a NEED. Not to mention that lack of sleep weighs on adults as well. For example, sleep deprivation may be linked to a higher chance of maternal depression. Having adequate sleep is important for the well-being of the whole family, and is part of leading happy, healthy lives. Responsive parenting is essential to forming healthy attachment bonds and trust with our children, that also leads to their health in the future. By supporting and responding to the needs of our children (including helping them get adequate sleep), we are building that trust. There is a middle ground that does not require leaving your child to cry when it comes to establishing healthy sleep habits, and I want to help families attain that balance.

How I got Here

When I became the go-to nanny for a handful of families 20 years ago, I quickly fell in love with working with children and their families.  I knew I wanted to make that my career.  I studied child development at Purdue University, from which I graduated in 2012 with distinction and a B.S. in Health and Human Sciences.  I began working professionally with children, families, and professional educators in various settings and roles.  I have experience working as an early childhood special education teacher and corporate trainer for education professionals.  I have had the pleasure of creating and delivering content-based trainings, working directly with children who posed unique behavioral challenges, and working directly with families and teams of professionals to create individualized learning plans.  Most recently, I have become a mother myself and completed the coursework through the Institute of Pediatric Sleep and Parenting to become a Certified Pediatric Sleep Consultant.  I am an avid learner, always on the hunt to further my knowledge and stay on top of current and relevant information. With the knowledge I’ve gained through my education, and the unique skill set I have developed through my professional, post-graduate experience over the last 10 years, I am equipped to provide your family with the best service possible.

My Philosophy

When it comes to improving sleep, I take a holistic approach, looking at your unique child, your parenting style, your goals and the challenges you are facing, outside factors, and much more.  We will work together on addressing the many puzzle pieces that go together to help your child achieve better sleep.  Whether you decide you want to sleep train or not, I can guide and support you through the process of improving sleep overall. I think every family should have the opportunity to educate themselves on topics that are important to them, get advice (when sought out), and make informed decisions that are best for their child and their family. So whether you are seeking help with general information regarding pediatric sleep, proactive sleep guidance, or sleep guidance with teaching towards independent sleep using methods that YOU are comfortable with, I can help. My goal is to meet parents where they are and provide solutions with proactive, responsive, and supportive techniques. I believe in educating families, providing them with realistic expectations, and providing middle ground solutions when it comes to improving sleep with our little ones. I believe you can set the stage for adequate quality and quantity of sleep for your child. It is possible to respond to every cry at night, while simultaneously guiding your child towards healthy sleep habits.  There is a middle ground, and I can help you get there.

When you come to The Pediatric Sleep Teacher:

  1. I am transparent about my philosophy so that you can decide if I am the best match for your family.

  2. I will work to learn about your baby and your views. You know your child best, and every child is unique.

  3. We will work on your specific concerns through individualized consultations or by creating an individualized sleep plan.

  4. We will only work on adjusting what’s not working for you. You won’t be expected to change everything about the way you parent - you are exactly the parent your child needs. Adjustments are only needed in the areas that are effecting your and your child’s sleep that YOU decide you want to work on.

  5. You will be provided with applicable materials and support to help you succeed.
